Some kids may find the school’s size daunting, especially in their first semester as this eight-story high school resulted from a merger of the High School of Performing Arts and the High School of Music and Art in 1984.
Classes are usually held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. which keeps students busy throughout the day. Students often complain about the hectic class schedule and lack of sleep. Despite this, the majority of students are content to be here. They say being around similar students who are excited about their work gives you a lot of energy.
Curriculum & Programs Offered

Fine Arts
The first two years are spent learning traditional skills and disciplines, such as drawing, graphic design, graphic design, painting with water-based media, acrylics and oils.
Advanced courses in these and other fields, such as architecture, art history, digital media, photography, computer graphics, ceramics, fashion illustration, printmaking, sculpturing, and mural painting are available to students who have completed the foundational art classes.
Those who want to apply must bring between 8 and 15 original works of art made in a variety of ways. The art should be based on what was seen, imagined, or remembered, and it should be labeled correctly.
Three-dimensional (3D) works can be shown in the form of photographs, not the originals. For the audition, people will be given three drawing tasks, such as drawing a person from life, drawing a still life from memory, and making a color drawing from their imagination.
The school will provide all the drawing materials you’ll need for the audition.
Instrumental Music
Students learn music theory, the history of music, and how to sing by sight. There are four symphony orchestras and two pit orchestras that play in this studio.
Participants can also use a state-of-the-art recording studio called SoundLab to make, direct, and perform their own unique repertoire. Prepare a solo piece and bring one copy of the sheet music.
Applicants who play the piano, harp, or harpophone don’t need to bring their instruments to the auditions. The school will give you these instruments to use at the audition.
Applicants will be tested on their ability to remember rhythms and tones, and they will also be asked to read a piece of music by sight.
Vocal Music
Students learn how to sing by ear, how to read music, and about the history of music. Students are taught to sing in Italian, French, and German.
This studio also has a Gospel Choir, a Show Choir, and a Mixed Chorus, in addition to the choirs.A large-scale opera performance is also held every year.
For music electives, you can choose from chamber music, guitar, music technology, piano, and writing songs. Those who want to apply should prepare a solo song to sing in the audition room. During the event, either classical or popular music can be played.

The applicants do not have to choose a song from the options given though.
Dance
Ballet and modern dance are taught in blocks of four years, and students get a lot of training during that time.
Dance pedagogy, choreography, dance theater (tap and jazz), the business of dance, and professional skills are some of the options for electives.
Everyone who wants to apply has to take ballet and modern dance classes.
Those who want to apply must have ballet shoes and black dance clothes. Whether or not an applicant is right for a course of study depends on how well they can do in it.
Technical Theater
Hands-on instruction in areas such as scenic carpentry (electrics and lighting), stage management, technical drafting with AutoCAD (and 3DS Max) and welding is provided to students in the block programs.
Students are in charge of both making and putting on shows at various school functions.
College credits earned at SUNY Potsdam can be used at another college or university. You’ll need to present your diorama and a picture of it as part of your presentation.
During a small-group practical exercise, all applicants will demonstrate various aspects of technical theater.
Drama
The Drama program’s focus on acting preparation includes a block-programmed course in acting, voice and diction, physical methods, theatrical history, musical theater, acting on film, and career management.
Our four-year program ends with our Senior Drama Festival, where students can play in professional theaters several times.
Applicants must be able to give two very different one-minute monologues.
Candidates will have to do a reading on the spot and go through an interview.
Applicants might be asked to show how flexible they are, so they should wear clothes that don’t limit their movement.
Admissions
The audition process lasts from November to December, and the competition is fierce.
Talent isn’t enough, students must also have outstanding attendance, strong academics, and a Level 2 or higher on standardized ELA and math examinations in order to be accepted into LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.
State exams reveal that the majority of those who are accepted achieve a score of 3 or 4.
Students must have done well in school to get into Laguardia High School.
You must maintain a grade point average of at least 80 percent in each class to be eligible for admission to this university.
Acceptance Rate
Fiorello Henry LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts doesn’t use the SHSAT exam to decide who gets in. Instead, auditions or portfolios are used.
So, technically the Acceptance Rate is said to be 100% but not all of the students who give auditions are accepted.
With amazing talents pouring in every audition season, the competition for spots gets really intense and very few of the applicants actually make it through.
The exact numbers would be rather tough to evaluate as the high school doesn’t disclose such data. But talking to the accepted students and combing through various forums on the internet we deduced that around 1 in 8 candidates get selected after auditions.

Bess Myerson (Class of 1941)
She was the first Miss America to be a model, politician, and television actor as well as being Jewish.
In the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust, it was regarded as an affirmation of the Jewish community’s contribution to society.
Actually, in terms of beauty and fame, she was the most well-known Jewish woman since Queen Esther.
Walt Framer’s game program “The Big Payoff” hired Myserson as the “Lady in Mink.”
Myerson was known for her sense of humor and appeared as a panelist on “The Name’s the Same” (1954) and “I’ve Got a Secret” (1958β1967).
Myerson pleaded the fifth in her divorce case with Carl Andrew Capasso’s sewage contractor, Hortense Gabel, in 1983, while acting as Commissioner of Cultural Affairs under Ed Koch. Gabel was accused of taking payments from Myerson and Capasso. This saga was dubbed “The Bess Mess.”
